the one where i thought i could thread sketch ...

A couple of weeks ago I was feeling very patriotic, and had an idea to thread sketch a map of Australia onto some of my swizzle fabric and make a cushion. Sounds simple enough ...

Turns out that I can't seem to make it work! I see lots of problems ~ the lines are too smooth, uniform, and not "sketchy" enough. I think it needs to be a bit messier and pointy, if that makes sense. Also, poor old Tassie looks a bit worse for wear ~ a bit too blobby (sorry Tassie!).

My ideas for fixing (so far) include adding another shade of thread. My sewing machine (yes, I'm blaming the machine now!) doesn't seem to want to let me lower the feed dogs and sew straight stitch, so if I want it too look a bit more "messy" I may have to resort to actually reading the instruction book.

Any suggestions gratefully welcomed!

More creativity here (each Thursday).

I think it looks brilliant Nic!
Did you use a normal foot or a free motion foot? A free motion foot with the feed dogs down would make it much messier.

on my old janome, there's a setting called stretch stitch,,and it goes forward one, then back one,and forward one again,so u have 3 stitches in the one spot,,,hope that makes sense.Worked well for me.

Looks pretty good from here! I'm pretty clueless when it comes to free motion stuff - presume you're using a darning foot?

I get what you mean about the messier look, but it still looks pretty fab:) I like the idea of sew sketching but haven't been brave enough to try yet - at least you are giving it a go:) Cyndy

I think it looks great. I find with my Janome I have to use the darning foot but leave the feed dogs up or the tension on the back goes totally hey-wire. Could be something to try?? ...

How funny, I spent today doing the same thing (not an aussie map though), still wondering if I want it more sketchy or to leave it really neat though :-/

I like it too! Maybe another go around to make it more prominent. ... but frankly it looks grand as it is :)
